New Year's Eve will be a special one in CW this year, thanks to our kickoff event First Night, celebrating our community, 2017 and a year-long celebration of Canada turning 150 year's old.
First Night will jump start our celebrations. This family-friendly event will take place in Fergus along the Riverwalk of the Grand River and downtown Fergus. To cap off the year-long festivities, a second annual First Night celebration will take place Dec. 31, 2017 in Elora.
A stage will be set up beside the Fergus Library with live entertainment throughout the evening, with performances by:
- "The Realtors"
- 5 Live Rock
- Nick Gush & friends
- Vinyl Sons
- There will be activities for all ages including:
- Cards, board games and warm refreshments at Melville United Church.
- Colouring, refreshments and children's activities at the Fergus Grand Theatre
- Selfies, 1867 style
- Canadian inspired crafts
- A special appearance by John A. MacDonald himself!
And no celebration is complete without fireworks! We will be showcasing an amazing firework show with the first one taking place at 9 p.m. followed by the finale at midnight. Mayor Kelly Linton will be on hand to ring in 2017 with the community.
We are excited to have our local Parishes and Churches join in on the celebration of ringing in the New Year. For those within listening range of the Church Bells, listen at midnight for 150 celebratory rings to bring in 2017 and the announcement of Canada's 150th birthday. For many of our local churches this is no small task. Congregation volunteers will be on hand to ring the bells 150 times. In many cases the bells which are still operated manually, this no small task!
