Road closures to support downtown businesses

Posted On Wednesday May 27, 2020

CENTRE WELLINGTON – In alignment with Phase 1 of Ontario's Framework for Re-opening the Province announcement on May 19, the framework provided the principles the government will use to reopen businesses, services and public spaces in three stages, while maintaining the health and safety of the people of Ontario as a top priority.  In an effort to support our local, downtown establishments, Township staff have been working closely with our local Business Improvement Area (BIAs) to assist them in re-opening their businesses.

To ensure our downtown retail and restaurants open safely under the provincial guidelines, and social distancing protocols, in partnership with the BIA, a decision has been made to close certain downtown streets every weekend from 9 a.m. on Saturday to 7 p.m. on Sunday. This will allow stores to bring merchandise out to the sidewalk and curbside pick-up options.

“This creative solution was possible because of the teamwork of downtown merchants, Elora BIA, Township of Centre Wellington and Wellington County. We all worked together to find a way to keep people safe while providing opportunities for our downtown businesses.” said Mayor Linton.  “Closing sections of our downtown opens the streetscape; allows for physical distancing; and provides a new pedestrian friendly downtown hub.”

The street closure will begin this weekend, Saturday May 30 at 9 a.m. and re-open at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 31.  The following streets will be affected by the closure:

  • West Mill Street from Price St. to Metcalfe St.
  • East Mill St. from Metcalfe St. to Karger Gallery
  • Metcalfe Street (from West Mill St. to Geddes St.)
  • There will be no parking on Church St West on weekends as this will become a 2 way street for the residents who live on Church St West.

Visitors to downtown Elora will be encouraged, through signage to park at the following locations:

  • The south parking lot at the LCBO, located at 23 Metcalfe St. Elora.
  • The Elora & District Community Centre, located at 29 David St W, Elora.
  • The Elora Mill parking lot located on the south side of the river.
  • Municipal Office building parking lot in Elora, 1 MacDonald Square.  Vehicles can park in front, and behind the building.

“The Elora BIA is excited for the closure of our downtown streets to motorized traffic” said Jonathan Laurencic, Chair of the Elora BIA.  “The challenges of COVID-19 to local businesses have been unprecedented and require creative solutions to promote positive economic impacts. We believe that pedestrians and shop owners will benefit from the ability to physical distance while taking part in a unique shopping experience in our downtown.”

Staff are currently working with the Fergus BIA on plans to assist them with their re-opening goals.
