Township is ready to welcome minor sports groups back on the ice

Posted On Thursday October 01, 2020

CENTRE WELLINGTON – After weeks of preparation, the ice will ready on October 5 on all three ice surfaces in Centre Wellington. The Township’s recreational facilities were closed by a provincial emergency order in March 2020. Township staff have been busy reviewing new restrictions and guidelines and developed re opening plans that consider staff resources, Public Health requirements and financial implications since the Province’s re-opening Stage 3 announcement of its Framework for Reopening during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff have been working closely with our major ice users to provide a safe re-opening of our ice surfaces.

“We have done exceptionally well as a community to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Centre Wellington” said Mayor Kelly Linton. “As the province eases restrictions and additional activities resume, we want to maintain the same commitment. Our residents want to participate in physical activity and engage socially in a protective environment. By opening all three of our ice surfaces in a safe and responsible way we are giving our community the opportunity they are asking for”.

The focus on return to play for the local minor sport organizations has been the priority for phase 1 of opening Township ice surfaces. A phased approach will allow for staff to adjust as needed, ensure facility limits for mandatory capacity (Provincial Order 364/20) are enforced and safely re-open to priority users such as minor sports groups first.
Phase 1 entails:
• Ice availability at the Elora Arena and the CW Community Sportsplex on both pads A & B.
• Hours of operation will be Monday to Friday from 4-11 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Ice Allocation will be for Minor Sports Groups only, which includes the CW Minor Hockey Association, Grand River Girls Hockey, Elora Fergus Ringette, Elora Skating Club and the Fergus Skating Club.

There will be no private rentals, township programming (i.e. public skating or shinny programs), tournaments or special events. These opportunities will be part of later phases. During the start-up phases there will be less ice available, capacity limits for users to allow for proper cleaning and disinfecting, risk mitigation controls and proper following of provincial orders.

During this initial phase of opening, parents/guardians and on ice users can expect the following:
• When you arrive to the arena, the on-ice user must arrive and leave fully dressed. A small duffel bag will be permitted to carry skates, gloves, water bottle and helmet. Goalies may arrive and leave with their base layer, socks and hockey pants on. They will be permitted to bring a bag with the rest of their gear to put on in facility.
• Arrive with your water bottle filled already. Water fountains and water bottle fill stations will not be available for use.
• Facility users must line up outside their respective entrance doors keeping the 6 ft./2 m.
• A representative from the users association will open the entrance door 20 minutes prior to the rental time.
• On-ice users will proceed to the designated dressing rooms. Within each dressing room there will be stations clearly marked.
• If the participant needs assistance with tying their skates, stations have been placed in the warm viewing areas for skate tying only. These stations will be sanitized after each rental. Parents/guardians are not allowed in the dressing rooms to maintain social distancing protocols.
• Parents/guardians are not able to leave and then re-enter the facility once participant is on the ice surface.
• Once the rental has ended, users will have 15 minutes to vacate the facility.
• Please exit through the same door you entered.
• No outside food or drink will be permitted.
