Mutual Agreement will see a section of the Elora Cataract Trail re-open

CENTRE WELLINGTON – A mutual agreement between the Township and the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) will see a section of the Elora Cataract Trail re-open between Elora and Fergus effective today, Friday, May 1.

The short-term agreement identifies that the Township will maintain and monitor the trail section between Beatty Line and Gerrie Road, in return for allowing the trail to re-open to the public. The Elora Cataract trail was closed in March, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The GRCA made the difficult decision at that time to close all of their properties for the safety of the public. This meant all properties and trails owned and managed by the GRCA in Centre Wellington were closed to the public until further notice.

“Use of our trails during this time is extremely important for mental stability and a healthy lifestyle, as long as we are maintaining physical distancing protocols” said Mayor Kelly Linton.  “I want to thank our CAO, Andy Goldie and appointed GRCA board member, Councillor Ian MacRae who took the lead in this partnership that allows us to re-open this necessary link through our community.  This agreement is another example of working together during these unprecedented times to ensure our communities health and safety is a top priority.”

“The GRCA recognizes the importance of access to nature for community health and well-being,” says Helen Jowett, Chair, Grand River Conservation Authority. “Closing our conservation areas, trails and properties to the public was a difficult, but necessary decision, to ensure the safety of both staff and members of the public who access our properties. We are very pleased to enter into this short-term agreement with the Township, and partner to re-open access to this important community amenity.”

This is a rapidly evolving situation; discussions and decisions are ongoing. Any changes in operations will be communicated and posted to the Townships website at and on our social media platforms, and  Further information regarding the impact of COVID-19 on GRCA operations is posted on the GRCA’s website at
