CENTRE WELLINGTON – This year Doors Open offers much more than just a self-guided tour – you will have the opportunity to visit nine incredible locations with a unique variety of spaces and storytelling. On Saturday, June 16th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., several local buildings will throw their doors wide open to give residents and visitors an opportunity to celebrate local heritage by exploring sometimes hidden, always interesting places while hearing stories from years gone by.
Featured locations include the Marshall Block, who are opening their doors one year after being a part of Doors Open 2017 showcasing the completed renovations and effort to preserve heritage features. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wellington Advertiser and experience how your weekly newspaper comes together. Tour a working wood shop at Almost Anything Wood and learn how they reclaim some local heritage trees into functional works of art. Visit the heritage home of the future at Wrighthaven Homes Net Zero house, 'The Solhaven' and then slip back in time with a visit to one of the oldest homes in Fergus, 'Craighead.' Ring the church bell at Melville United; visit the ghost of Anne Boyle at the Elora Centre for the Arts; and journey to the attic of the Wellington County Museum and Archives. Finally, top the day off with a self-guided walking tour of Downtown Fergus discovering the past and tales of the town. Historical walking tours will take place with Older Voices, a preloved art sale, and the celebration of National Fudge Day at I Love Chocolate.
A passport will guide you from location to location. Collect four or more passport stamps for a chance to win a tickets to local events including the Fergus Scottish Festival, Elora Festival, and Riverfest Elora. Passports are now available at the Elora Tourism Information Centre and the Chamber of Commerce or on the day of at each Doors Open location.
