Township Declares Significant Weather Event

As of 11 am on December 30^th, the Township of Centre Wellington has declared a Significant Weather Event under Ontario Regulation 239/02 – Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways due to the current and forecasted significant snowfall, high winds, and blowing snow affecting the community.

Environment Canada is forecasting heavy snowfall, accompanied by strong winds, which may result in reduced visibility, snow-covered roadways, drifting snow, and hazardous travel conditions. These conditions may impact the Township’s ability to meet normal winter road maintenance timelines.  A Significant Weather Event declaration indicates that the Township’s winter maintenance crews are actively responding, but that snow accumulation and blowing snow may delay achieving normal maintenance standards until the event has ended and conditions improve.

Residents are reminded to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, and allow extra time for winter maintenance crews to safely complete their work.

Helpful Tips for Residents During Heavy Snow and Blowing Snow

Travel & Road Safety

• Avoid non-essential travel during the storm.
• Reduce speed and increase following distance if travel is necessary.
• Watch for drifting snow and sudden white-out conditions.
• Keep headlights on to improve visibility.
• Give snowplows plenty of space and never pass a plow unless it is safe and legal to do so.

Parking & Snow Removal

• Follow all winter parking restrictions, including overnight (2 am-6 am) parking restrictions, to allow effective snow clearing.
• Avoid placing snow from private driveways onto roadways or sidewalks.
• Ensure the sidewalk is not obstructed by vehicles.
• Place garbage bags and recycling bins well back from the curb where possible.

Visibility & Wind Hazards

• Secure loose outdoor items that could blow into roadways.
• Be cautious near trees and utility lines during high winds.
