Understanding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work helps identify and reduce barriers so more people can participate fully in community life. The sections below explain key concepts that guide the Township’s approach.
Equity means recognizing that people may face different barriers and may need different supports to access the same opportunities. Equity does not mean treating everyone exactly the same. It means working toward fair access, fair treatment, and fair outcomes.
What are equity-deserving communities?
Equity-deserving communities are groups that have historically faced systemic barriers, exclusion, discrimination, or underrepresentation. The term recognizes that these communities deserve fair access, opportunity, representation, and respect.
DEI matters because communities change, needs differ, and barriers can prevent people from fully participating in public life. Local government has a role in making services, spaces, communications, and opportunities more accessible and inclusive.
