Freedom of Information

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the Act) governs the access to information from public institutions that is available to the public.

Its two main purposes are:

  1. To provide the right of access to information held by institutions covered by the Act; subject to limited and specific exemptions
  2. To protect the privacy of individuals with respect to their personal information held by government institutions

The Act establishes a process through which you can gain access to a township's records, while acknowledging that exemptions from this general right of access are necessary.

Requests for information

Most of the time, a formal request for information under the Act is not required to access information from the Township. Many records are available online or by contacting the department responsible for the records. If a formal request is required please follow the steps below:

  1. Complete the access request form or write a letter indicating the information you are requesting. Requester's should include as much detail as possible.
  2. Forward the completed form or letter along with the mandatory $5.00 application fee to:

FOI Coordinator
Legislative Services
Township of Centre Wellington
1 MacDonald Square
Elora ON  N0B 1S0

A request is normally processed within 30 days.  This means that the requested information will be available from the Township to the requester within this time frame. Additional fees are applicable in accordance with the Act and all responses are provided in writing. If a time extension is required, the requester will be notified in writing.
