St. David Street Reconstruction Project Complete in Fergus

CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township is pleased to announce the official completion of the St. David Street North Reconstruction Project in Fergus, marking the final milestone in a major three-year infrastructure project. St. David Street will officially reopen to traffic at 5 p.m. today, following the completion of all phases of construction.

The project transforms the roadway into a safer, more accessible and welcoming community corridor, with improvements that support people walking, cycling and driving. Enhanced lighting, pedestrian crossings, traffic calming, separated cycling facilities, accessible sidewalks and improved intersections will help people feel more comfortable and secure travelling through the area. New trees, landscaping, benches and streetscape features will create an attractive and vibrant public space that encourages people to spend time downtown and supports local businesses.

The St. David Street reconstruction was identified as a high-priority project through the Township’s Asset Management Plan, as much of the existing infrastructure had reached, or was nearing, the end of its service life.

The completed project includes:

• Replacement of the municipal watermain and sanitary sewer
• Improvements to the storm sewer system
• Full reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks
• Separated cycling facilities
• Traffic calming measures
• Signalized intersection upgrades
• A new controlled pedestrian crossing at St. George Street
• New trees, landscaping, benches and decorative streetlights
• Other streetscape improvements supporting walking, cycling and access to downtown businesses.

The project was completed in three construction stages. Phase 1, from St. Andrew Street to just north of the Garafraxa Street intersection, was completed in 2024. Phase 2, extending from just north of Garafraxa Street to Edinburgh Avenue, was substantially completed in 2025, with final infrastructure, paving, landscaping, and active transportation work completed in 2026.

The project was supported by a $2,849,176 contribution from the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Transportation’s 2023–24 Connecting Links Program.

The Township recognizes the residents, businesses, property owners, visitors, contractors and community members who were impacted by the construction and thanks them for their cooperation and patience throughout the project.

With construction now complete, St. David Street provides a renewed and improved connection through Fergus and supports the Township’s continued investment in safe, reliable and sustainable infrastructure.
