Marriage Licences

Now available in the Township of Centre Wellington, couples can apply online for a marriage licence using ServiceOntario's portal system.

Simply visit the ServiceOntario's online system and select “Township of Centre Wellington” as your preferred municipality for licence pickup.

After completing your online application, only one party is required to attend the municipal office to pick up the marriage licence and an appointment is preferred to do so. If both parties do not attend for pickup of the licence, the person attending must bring valid ID for both parties and any other required documentation such as divorce certificates (see more information below).

If you require assistance to apply for a marriage licence via the ServiceOntario portal or require accommodations to fill out a paper application form, our Township Staff can assist you at our Elora office (1 MacDonald Square). Please note that if you are completing a paper application in the office, it must be signed by both parties.

A marriage licence is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of 3 months from the date of issue.

Please review any additional requirements regarding ID, licence fees, divorced applicants, and service hours listed below.

Two pieces of ID are required for both parties. Bring an original Birth Certificate plus valid photo ID such as a passport, driver's licence or Canadian Citizenship.  A health card is not an acceptable form of ID.

If divorced in Canada, your Original or Court Certified Copy of the Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute.  A Divorce Judgement / Divorce Order is not acceptable proof of divorce.

If divorced outside of Canada, you will need to send the following documents to ServiceOntario:

  • marriage licence application form: completed and signed
  • statement of sole responsibility: for each divorce (signed by both people who are planning to get married and a witness)
  • legal opinion letter: from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both people who plan to get married, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in Ontario
  • divorce decree or annulment: an original or court-certified copy in English or French. If the decree is in another language, you will need to include a translated copy and an affidavit sworn by a certified translator

Please mail these documents directly to: Service Ontario, Marriage Office, PO Box 4600, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay ON P7B 6L8
