Township installs Veterans’ Crosswalks in Elora and Fergus
CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township has installed decorative Veterans’ Crosswalks at the Elora and Fergus cenotaphs, creating a lasting public tribute to local veterans and all those who have served.
The new crosswalks are located at the entrance and exit to the Elora Cenotaph at 1 MacDonald Square, and at the entrances to Norman Craig Square in Fergus from Tower Street and Bridge Street.
The project follows a request brought forward by the Royal Canadian Legion branches in Elora and Fergus and was approved by Council as a meaningful addition to the Township’s ongoing recognition of veterans and Remembrance Day.
The crosswalks incorporate veterans’ symbolism while maintaining required pedestrian-crossing marks and accessibility considerations. Their locations were selected at existing controlled, low-volume crossings to support safe and clear movement for pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and people using mobility devices.
“The Veterans Crosswalks are a terrific salute for those in our community who have served, and will be a great visual for our upcoming Remembrance Day Services, “ said Don Cubbidge, President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 229, Elora. “On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion. Branch 229, Elora, a big thank you to the leadership and staff at the Township of Centre Wellington for getting this project completed.”
“Branch 275 is very pleased to see this project completed,” said Randy Graham, Past President and Poppy Chair of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 275, Fergus. “The location on both sides of the cenotaph is perfect and will serve as a daily reminder to all that remembering the sacrifices of the many who gave their lives for our freedoms is all year long and not just one day in November.”
The Veterans’ Crosswalks complement the Township’s existing efforts to recognize veterans, including support for Remembrance Day ceremonies and parades, cenotaph maintenance, remembrance banners, and ceremonial flag displays.
