Township of Centre Wellington Invites Community to Unveiling of Permanent Display Honouring Indigenous Communities

The Township invites members of the community and media to attend the unveiling of a new Permanent Contextual Display at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.

The display has been developed as part of the Township’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation, education, and fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities. Created in collaboration with the Indigenous Logos Working Group, Indigenous partners, and Indigenous artist Kory Parkin, the display provides historical and cultural context regarding Indigenous-themed logos and imagery within Township facilities.

The unveiling marks an important milestone in a process that began in 2018, following a request from the Human Rights Commissioner that the Township address the use of Indigenous names, logos, and imagery in Township facilities by non-Indigenous groups. The resulting Permanent Contextual Display acknowledges the origins and significance of the imagery, while reflecting the Township’s commitment to ongoing learning, understanding, and respectful engagement.

The display, measuring approximately 19.5 feet long and 39 inches high, is located above the doors leading from the arena pad to the lobby, adjacent to the lacrosse banners.

Community members, Indigenous partners, project contributors, and Township representatives will gather to recognize this important step in the Township’s reconciliation journey.
