School Zone Parking

The safety of children in and around schools is a top priority for the Township of Centre Wellington - and is a shared responsibility. Throughout the school year, traffic increases during school drop-off and pick-up times, and improper or illegal parking can create serious safety hazards for students, staff, and other road users.

Below is a list of common parking violations and general parking guidelines to help ensure school zones remain safe for students, staff, families, and nearby residents.

Parking Enforcement: Municipal Law Enforcement Officers will periodically conduct parking enforcement during the school year and going forward. Please ensure you comply with the parking requirements as indicated by signage.

  • In the school parking lot, in accordance with any signage posted.

  • On streets EXCEPT where "No Parking" or "No Stopping" signs are posted and in accordance with all other parking regulations.

Stopping is NOT allowed at any time during posted hours - even for drop-off/pick-up.

  • Do not stop your vehicle, even for a few seconds.

  • Do not let anyone in or out of the car.

  • Keep moving with traffic at all times.

These signs are posted to alert drivers that parking is prohibited. A driver is in violation of this parking regulation if they have stopped the vehicle but the engine is running, hazard lights are flashing, or there is someone in the car.

  • You may stop briefly to drop off or pick someone up - no delays.

  • Do not wait for your child in the car.

  • Do not exit your vehicle, even briefly.

Fire Routes are driveways, laneways, or roads that must stay clear for emergency vehicles.

You cannot stop or park here - even with the engine running or hazard lights on.

  • You may stop briefly to drop off or pick up someone, but you must drive away immediately.

  • You cannot wait in your vehicle, even for a short time.

  • You cannot leave your vehicle unattended for any reason.

These spaces are reserved only for vehicles with a valid Accessible Parking Permit.

  • The permit must be clearly displayed and used by the person to whom it was issued.

  • No stopping or parking without a valid permit.

School bus zones are reserved only for school buses picking up or dropping off people within the defined areas.

You cannot stop or park any other vehicles in a school bus loading zone.

In addition to the most common parking violations listed above, drivers should ensure that they are not stopped or parked so as to block a fire hydrant, intersection, bus stop, private driveway or sidewalk.
